HOMELESSNESS

Homelessness is an issue that touches all corners of our district. It's going to take an "all of the above" approach, including bringing together our City agencies, nonprofits, and others. Tyler is ready to get to work in a collaborative and proactive way on this issue.

Tyler's Action Plan:

1. Grow the Mayor's CORE program to address encampments in our neighborhoods.

2. Secure more Housing First units for the homelessness.

3. Work to obtain federal and state grants to address the needs of our homeless community.

CRIME

Crime has been on the rise in our neighborhoods, and we need to say enough is enough. Lately, it's taken on more insidious forms beyond property theft and break-ins, and now includes illegal game rooms, drug use in our parks, and violent acts even in broad daylight. Tyler will rally our community together to fight back.

Tyler's Action Plan:

1. Focus on recruitment and retention to fill vacancies at HPD.

2. Expand Neighborhood Watch and Community Policing programs.

3. Work with the Prosecutor to crack down on repeat offenders.

1. Incentivize the construction of long-term affordable rental units.

2. Ensure our City's planning creates housing for local people.

3. Reduce regulatory barriers and roadblocks that hinder affordable housing production.

ROADS

It’s no secret: many roads in our district are in poor condition, and that’s unacceptable. We must do better. Comprehensive plans need to be in place for both major repairs and preventative maintenance.

As a City Councilmember, Tyler will assure that all city road work will be done by those who provide the best value, have the best track record and qualifications, and make sure the city demands that our road crews adhere to the highest standards.

THE ECONOMY

One of the most important functions of the Honolulu City Council is to promote a strong economy that supports local businesses and employees. The city must streamline its permitting process, especially for small businesses who wish to invest in expanding their operations, reduce their utility costs, and hire more employees.

As a City Councilmember, Tyler will fight for small businesses, support our vibrant Chinatown arts and cultural district, and prioritize smart infrastructure investment so our economy can thrive.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Tyler believes that climate change is one of the largest threats to our island home. Tyler has advocated for full funding of the City’s Office of Climate Change, Sustainability & Resiliency, and believes firmly that Honolulu must fulfill its obligations under the Paris Climate Agreement.

As a City Councilmember, Tyler will continue to support the full funding of OCCSR as well as work with the State and Federal government to accomplish Hawaiʻi’s goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE

We all know that water is life. Tyler is committed to doing everything we can to protect our water systems – not just our natural aquifers, but also the infrastructure that delivers clean, drinkable water to every resident on this island. Tyler will work collaboratively with BWS to protect our water sources, prevent water main breaks and leaks, and plan ahead for future needs.

Tyler also recognizes the need to improve our sewer and stormwater drainage systems, especially in our older neighborhoods where existing capacity is limited.
